Our culture of rigorous training and preparedness
Our strong safety track record is underpinned by our expertise and experience in ensuring the products and chemicals we manage remain safely contained where they belong.
We have extensive personal and process safety procedures which are designed to protect the integrity of our on-site operations and mitigate the potential for incidents such as an unintended release of product, fire or explosion.
These scenarios may have impacts beyond our facility boundary and on our neighbouring communities and our team take meticulous precautions to help prevent them from occurring.
PRECAUTIONARY PROGRAMS
We have many ongoing precautionary programs and measures to carefully manage our onsite materials, products, and equipment including an extensive Leak Detection and Repair Program for refinery operating equipment, pipeline leak detection systems, robust Preventative Maintenance programs with regular equipment inspections, the use of automated safety systems and alarms on equipment, and a Fire Safety Plan. Our facility has a staff of highly-skilled and accredited operators that undergo regular hands-on training for emergency response situations.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLANS
Parkland’s emergency response plans are developed in accordance with local, provincial, and federal regulatory requirements. We follow the internationally-recognized Incident Command System (ICS) for emergency preparedness and response. In addition to the multiple table top exercises we conduct each year, we run annual simulations of major incidents that include the involvement of key stakeholders, including regulatory agencies, first responders and local First Nations. This kind of regular testing of our preparedness ensures we are ready to respond in the unlikely event of an emergency. And having our stakeholders involved keeps us plugged in to their needs.
Communication with the public is a central part of our response planning, and our procedures are designed so that urgent communications reach our community and other stakeholders in an efficient and effective way
Communications may include press releases, public advisories, and notification to government agencies such as Burnaby Fire Department, Fraser Health, Metro Vancouver, and others.
This website will also serve as an ongoing source of critical information. Emergencies that require evacuation will be managed by appropriate government agencies.
