Recent amendments to Canada’s Competition Act have introduced changes to representations to the public concerning the protection or restoration of the environment or mitigating the environmental and ecological causes or effects of climate change (collectively, “Environmental Statements”) unless they can be adequately and properly substantiated in accordance with internationally recognized methodology. There is uncertainty in how these legislative amendments will be interpreted and applied, and we are awaiting guidance from the Competition Bureau regarding them. As a result, we are currently reviewing our disclosure practices with respect to Environmental Statements. While Parkland has decided to keep past Environmental Statements on its website, they are available strictly as historical information and for reference purposes only. These Environmental Statements are not to be interpreted as active representations by Parkland or any of its affiliates and subsidiaries. Parkland disclaims all liability for the use of any Environmental Statement for any other purpose. Parkland remains committed to its sustainability journey, including working towards lowering our environmental impact and helping our customers lower theirs.
The Burnaby Refinery has been a proud and integral member of the Burnaby community since 1935. Acquired by Parkland in 2017, this is one of Canada’s only remaining West Coast refineries. The highly experienced team who run it is very proud to safely produce and provide British Columbians with the transportation fuels that support their economy and lifestyle.
Safety, protecting the environment and maintaining reliable operations are our top priorities at Parkland. They underpin our business and operational practices and are foundational to our organizational culture. We have extensive systems, processes and procedures designed to protect our employees, customers, communities and the environment.
In addition to the extensive steps we take to help prevent safety issues from occurring, we have equally robust emergency preparedness plans. These are regularly tested, in some cases with the participation of local authorities, emergency services and first responders.
